Laptop Speakers Not Working? Advice Here
“Help! My laptop speakers are not working anymore!” This is heard all too often in the laptop world. We can help! This article will cover some steps you can take to fix your laptop’s speakers.
Sometimes we may think our laptop speakers are broke when really it’s something simple to fix. First, always reboot your computer to see if that fixes the issue. Try to clear any memory settings according to your laptop’s user guide, if possible. Lastly, make sure your computer is not muted. If those do not help, consider these questions and suggestions:
Can you use your headphone jack? If you can you can connect headphones or external speakers. Purchasing external computer speakers and hooking them up to your laptop from a desk could save you a lot of time, hassle, and/or money if you do not want to fix your laptop’s internal speakers.
Is your laptop on any kind of warranty? If it is, you’re in very good luck. Most new laptop computer warranties are for one year, however if you purchased an extended warranty that would cover it from 2 to up to 3 years depending on your plan. Calling your computer’s manufacturer will help greatly. The customer service professionals are trained to fix these kinds of issues and should be able to talk with you on the phone to fix your sound; or, if the issue cannot be resolved your laptop will be fixed under the conditions of your warranty.
If your broken laptop is not under warranty anymore, we can still help you fix your laptop speakers. Here are some things to consider and what to do:
Do you have your laptop’s repair DVDs or CDs? If you do, try putting those in and follow the “repair” instructions. Make sure you read the instructions very carefully; choosing the wrong option could wipe out your system clean.
Did you drop your laptop recently or damage it in any way? If so, you could have damaged your headphone jack or speakers. Fixing this would require a replacement part or replacement laptop; alternatively you can seek out a new laptop to purchase if yours is old.
Did you install or uninstall anything on your laptop computer recently? Your laptop speakers not working may be due in part because of a software issue. There are a variety of options for fixing this issue, including visiting your computer manufacturer’s website to re-download your laptop’s drivers. Additionally you can do a system backup on your laptop, which will keep your personal settings but reset all system settings. Be especially careful with this option because making an error could result in lost music, photos, videos, etc.
Are you using multiple audio programs, or do you have external speakers connected to your laptop? If so, they could be conflicting with each other. Try disconnecting any “extras” and see if your laptop speakers come back to life.
If all else fails… You can hire a computer technician to fix your laptop from a local geek squad or laptop computer repair shop. Try to call several places and get prices from them. Make sure you get a price on them looking at your laptop, and then a price for them to actually fix it. Sometimes places charge a fee just to assess your laptop so make sure you don’t get overcharged without expecting it.
Restoring your laptop back to the beginning: If you don’t want to pay for a repair and still can’t find a solution no matter what, you can restore your laptop back to the beginning. You will have to use your system restore CDs or DVDs if they came with your laptop, or you’ll have to order them from your computer manufacturer. This will completely erase your personal files, including music and other media, so make sure you back up anything important before you do this.
Or, you can choose to live with your broken laptop speakers if none of the above suits you! Many people simply connect external speakers using the headphone jack or use headphones despite their laptop speakers not working.
